The Constant is Change

October 28, 2009

The word change again. Hmmm.
I’ve used this phrase many times in relation to managing Diabetes. It’s still hard to fully grasp and accept but the constant Is change.

Recently I woke up, multiple times at different times of the day, thank God, to some out of nowhere lows.

Sunday night I was 84 mg/dl; I ate a snack, went to bed. Woke up about seven hours later to 66 mg/dl. It sucked. Ruined my morning. The next night I drank about five cups of tea, non-caffeinated, no snack, not sure of my blood sugar before I decided to lie down, I felt odd and told myself (holy run on sentence – hey! get back here!) to put a temp basal on. I didn’t. I fell asleep to be woken abruptly about three hours later to a 51 mg/dl. I ate, didn’t care, put on a temp basal (not sure why…rage temping maybe? ha) then went back to bed. A lovely 308 mg/dl awaited me to start off my day. These rebounds suck. Later that night I took a dive after work, I was exhausted from the morning, still. I woke to a 77 mg/dl. Did not feel a thing either. Scared the heck outta me.

Then (it never ends), last night, I took a nap, woke to an 83 mg/dl, made dinner, started eating (slice of pizza and some chips). I felt weird. I was about to bolus and something told me to do another blood test. 63 mg/dl. Seriously?! How does That make Any sense whatsoever!? Hey Fabu Kelly, I think I may have some serious anger issues after lows. I need to watch myself. By the way all, if you haven’t, check out this great post.

Update after last nights lows: I eventually tested again, rounded out at 199 mg/dl. The color of me impressed did not last though, the “I feel icky” should have been a clue. I shot up to a whoppin’ 356 mg/dl, corrected then hit a 374 mg/dl, corrected again and ended at 298 mg/dl before finally giving in to some much needed rest.

Whole lotta change goin’ on is making me a wee bit tired. This roller coaster never goes down one track, eh. Too bad, I love roller coasters but this week, a volatile love/hate thang is happenin’.

Just when I feel I’ve got the down thing handled, all this madness of change creeps in. My anxiety is a bit up. Probably a bit stressed too. Definitely exhausted and I have so much to do this week. I need a personal assistant for grocery shopping and laundry. Thanks.

“The constant in Diabetes is change.”

(maybe one day I’ll fully embrace this)

Diabetes is never the same disease two days in a row.
It’s a roller coaster ride of blood sugars – literally!
Your blood sugar goes low, then it goes high, and then just when you think you’ve figured out it’s course, it makes and unexpected loopty -loop followed by a hairpin turn- even when your doing everything right.
Sometimes Diabetes flips its bitch switch on because it can.
    Stay strong sister!
Don’t let the bastard changes get you down!
    We got your back!

Ugh, I hate that stuff. It’s like fishtailing. Once it starts it seems forever to get it back under control, if ever! Duck Fiabetes.

The constant in life is change, too… Yet change in life always seems to be more enjoyable! (Well, most of the time).

I also wish the highs in diabetes were more like the highs in life. That would be SO MUCH MORE FUN!
